College wrestling's most interesting schedule

Consider it a nomadic schedule for a college wrestling program with huge 2013-14 goals.

Notre Dame College wrestles just three traditional dual meets this season, including one at Ohio State on Friday, Nov. 15. The Falcons also face Ashland at home on Dec. 4 and visit Lake Erie College on Jan. 26. The Ashland meet is NDC's only home event in 2013-14.

The Ohio State dual represents gutsy scheduling by both sides, and it will pit NDC coach Frank Romano against his alma mater. Romano was a two-time captain for the Buckeyes. NDC has never faced Ohio State in a head-to-head sporting event.

The rest of the Falcons' schedule includes an eclectic mix of events. NDC will send wrestlers to four open tournaments hosted by Division I schools -- the season-opening Clarion Open (Nov. 3), Michigan State Open (Nov. 9), Cleveland State (Dec. 14) and Edinboro Open (Feb. 8). The high-caliber opens should push NDC's best wrestler, including returning NCAA champions Joey Davis and Eric Burgey. Davis went 33-0 and only surrendered one takedown as a freshman last season. Meetings between Davis and some of the top Division I  competitors should create a stir in the wrestling community.

The Falcons are also attending opens at Lake Erie College (Jan. 5), Mount Union (Jan. 19) and University of Indianapolis (Feb. 1) and three dual meet tournaments, including the NWCA Division II National Duals, which start Jan. 11 in Des Moines, Iowa. NDC finished second in the 16-team event last season.

By the time the NCAA Division II Super I Region I tournament begins March 1 in Johnstown, Pa., NDC wrestlers will have faced Division I, II and III, and NAIA competition. The Falcons should be tested when the national tournament begins at Cleveland's venerable Public Hall on March 14.

Area college football previews for Oct. 5

Ashland (1-3, 1-2 GLIAC) at Lake Erie College (1-3, 1-2)

When: 1 p.m.

Where: Jack Britt Memorial Stadium, Painesville

What to watch for: Lake Erie College's offense is playing at  dizzying pace. The Storm average 93.5 plays and 39.5 points per game. They ran 110 offensive plays in last week's 51-41 loss at Saginaw Valley State. LEC and Ashland have met three times and the series includes some high-scoring games, including Ashland's 87-17 victory in 2010. The Eagles won last year's game, 68-21, on their way to a NCAA Division II playoff appearance. ... After entering this season ranked ninth in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll, Ashland has sputtered, losing to Indianapolis, 10-9, Wayne State, 34-22, and Ferris State, 34-7. The Eagles handled Northern Michigan, 52-24, last weekend to earn their first victory. ... Ashland freshman Tra'Von Chapman is a big name to those follow Ohio high school football. The true freshman was a four-star recruit at Kent Roosevelt and signed with Division I Pitt. His stay in Pittsburgh ended in August, when he was dismissed by Coach Paul Chryst. Chapman pleaded guilty this past summer to assaulting a former girlfriend. He has completed 19 of 44 passes for 245 yards and has rushed for 56 yards on 14 carries in three games at Ashland.  ...LEC's defense should receive a boost from linebacker Marcus Rogers, who missed the first three games because of an elbow injury. Rogers had seven tackles last week at Saginaw Valley State. ...Ashland defensive lineman Jamie Meder is considered an NFL draft prospect.

Virginia-Wise (0-4, 0-2 MEC) at Notre Dame College (2-2, 1-2)

When: 2 p.m.

Where: Mueller Field, South Euclid

What to watch for: Notre Dame College enjoys its new digs. The Falcons are averaging 35 points and 501.5 yards per game at Mueller Field. More importantly, they are 2-0 at home. ...NDC is seeking its second 3-2 start in the program's four-year history. Virginia-Wise should give the Falcons plenty of opportunities to move past .500. The Cavaliers have committed 21 turnovers and have allowed 963 rushing yards. ... NDC senior Pedro Powell might be primed for another big day. Powell ranks eighth in Division II with 593 rushing yards. Powell, who gained 200 yards on 32 carries last week against Charleston, needs 10 yards to become the first 4,000-yard rusher in NDC history. ...NDC's Jack Foy leads Division II in receptions. He averages 12 per game.

Capital (1-2, 1-1 OAC) at John Carroll (3-0, 2-0)

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Shula Stadium, University Heights

What to watch for: John Carroll quarterback Mark Myers and top targets Marshall Howell and Aramis Greenwood are fun to watch. But the Blue Streaks are earning a defense-first reputation after posting two shutouts in their first three games. John Carroll leads all of college football in scoring defense (2.3 points per game) and ranks third in Division III in total defense (177.7 ypg). ...Senior linebacker Mitch Krotz (Madison), who started his career at Miami (Ohio), leads the Blue Streaks with 31 tackles. Another Madison alum, Nick Lasko, leads John Carroll with 1 1/2 sacks. ...First-year Capital coach Craig Candeto is a former Navy quarterback. He rushed for six touchdowns in the 2002 Army-Navy game.

High-scoring times in the OAC

Nobody involved with the Ohio Athletic Conference's first season in 1902 could have predicated what happened last weekend.

Let's start with Mount Union, the logical opening point in any OAC discussion. The Purple Raiders defeated Marietta, 84-14. Mount Union has accomplished some special things in the last 25 years, but the program had never dropped 12 touchdowns on somebody. Mount Union matched the OAC record for points in a game. Ohio Northern accomplished the same feat against Hiram in 1993.

In its race to keep up with Mount Union, Heidelberg, last year's conference runner-up and this year's trendy pick to push the Purple Raiders, defeated Wilmington, 66-12. The Scarlet Princes have scored 52 or more points in all three of their games. Heidelberg's high-scoring ways could continue this weekend against Marietta, which might face the toughest two-game midseason nightmare in Division III.

Last weekend's other three OAC winners -- Baldwin Wallace, John Carroll and Ohio Northern -- scored at least 23 points. All five of last weekend's winners prevailed by double digits.

Before declaring defense non-existent in the OAC, consider what John Carroll has accomplished. The Blue Streaks have allowed seven points through three games.

For those wondering, John Carroll doesn't face Mount Union and Heidelberg until November.
